6/8/02: KIWANIS AND TROOP 130 COLOR GOLDEN RED, WHITE AND BLUE
284 American flags will be flying from certain residences, businesses and public byways on Flag Day, June 14th. The 3'X5' flags, flying from 10 foot aluminum poles, will be put in place early morning June 14th and taken down by dusk. Members of Golden Kiwanis and Boy Scout Troop 130 will work together on what is rapidly becoming a Golden tradition. Four other special days are honored this way: Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day. A $25 (tax deductible) donation, and a call to either Janice Bellows 303-940-1713 (days) or Dewain Woods, 303-271-1110 (eves) will add a residence or business to the list of flag sponsors, provide the flag delivery/take down service, and include the placement of a mounting pipe near the front of the property. The Flag Project is another service of the Golden Kiwanis.
6/9/02: GOLDEN KIWANIS FLIPS PANCAKES FOR CANCER RESEARCH
Starting at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, June 30th, members of Golden's oldest service club will be feeding the walkers and runners of the 2002 Golden Relay. Teams will begin the race noon of the previous day and run/walk for 18 hours, camping out in Mines football field to enjoy each others efforts and get needed rest. The goal is to raise monies for the American Cancer Society whose work is driven by the dedicated efforts of thousands of volunteers. The relay celebration begins with the Survivor's lap and at dark lit luminaria bags will honor those who have lost the battle with this disease and those who continue the struggle. A small donation will allow anyone to be honored by one of these lights.
